About this book

A modern classic of African literature, and one of the great novels about war and love.

Half of a Yellow Sun is set in Nigeria in the 1960s, in the years before and during the Nigeria-Biafra war. It follows Ugwu, a village boy who becomes houseboy to the revolutionary university lecturer Odenigbo; Olanna, Odenigbo's beautiful partner; her sharp, independent twin sister Kainene; and Richard, an English writer drawn into Kainene's world.

As the new nation of Biafra rises and the war closes in, their loyalties, relationships and beliefs are tested in ways none of them could have imagined.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's second novel won the Orange Prize for Fiction (now the Women's Prize) and was later voted the prize's "Winner of Winners". Moving, intimate and unforgettable, it is essential reading for anyone who loved Purple Hibiscus or Americanah.
